The History of PGT Windows & Doors: Building Safety and Innovation Since 1980

PGT Window and Door

When it comes to impact-resistant windows and doors, few names are as trusted as PGT Windows & Doors. Known for pioneering hurricane protection solutions, PGT has grown from a small manufacturing business into one of the most respected window and door companies in the United States. Let’s take a look at the journey of this Florida-based brand and how it became a leader in safety, innovation, and performance.

Humble Beginnings in Southwest Florida

PGT was founded in 1980 in Venice, Florida, under the name Vinyl Tech. The company started by producing vinyl porch enclosures and quickly gained a reputation for quality craftsmanship and dependable customer service. As demand for customized enclosures and glass products increased, Vinyl Tech evolved to meet the needs of homeowners throughout Florida.

In 1987, the company changed its name to PGT Industries (short for Progressive Glass Technologies) and expanded its focus to include aluminum and vinyl framed windows and doors.

A Turning Point: Hurricane Andrew

In 1992, Hurricane Andrew devastated South Florida, leaving behind billions in damage and revealing a major gap in residential building safety—especially when it came to windows and doors. PGT responded with urgency and innovation.

By 1996, PGT introduced the WinGuard® line, one of the first impact-resistant windows and doors designed specifically to meet Florida’s increasingly strict hurricane codes. These products used laminated glass—similar to automobile windshields—to prevent shattering, even after impact.

WinGuard became a game-changer in the industry and positioned PGT as a trusted name in hurricane protection.

Continued Growth and Innovation

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, PGT continued to expand its product offerings and manufacturing capabilities. The company went public in 2016, becoming PGT Innovations, a parent company representing multiple brands in the impact window and door space, including CGI®, WinDoor®, and Western Window Systems.

Today, PGT Innovations employs thousands and operates one of the largest window and door manufacturing facilities in the nation, right in North Venice, Florida.

Commitment to Safety and the Future

PGT’s mission has always been clear: protect what matters most. Whether it’s with hurricane-resistant glass, energy-efficient frames, or sleek modern designs, PGT continues to push boundaries in both safety and style.

For homeowners in storm-prone areas like Southwest Florida, PGT isn’t just a brand—it’s peace of mind backed by decades of proven performance.
