The Founding of Modern Punta Gorda
Modern Punta Gorda traces its founding to 1884, when surveyor Kelly Harvey began laying out the town on behalf of entrepreneur Isaac Trabue. The town was originally known as Trabue and was filed in Manatee County on February 24, 1885.
According to the City of Punta Gorda, the city was incorporated on December 7, 1887, after the arrival of the railroad and the construction of the Hotel Punta Gorda.
