From Garage Startup to Industry Powerhouse: The Historic Growth of PGT Windows & Doors

When we think of industry leaders in impact-resistant windows and doors, PGT Windows & Doors is often at the top of the list. Known for their cutting-edge products and unwavering commitment to safety, PGT’s journey is more than just a business success story—it’s a testament to innovation, resilience, and strategic growth.
A Modest Start with a Big Vision
PGT began its journey in 1980 in Venice, Florida, originally operating under the name Vinyl Tech. At the time, the company focused primarily on vinyl patio enclosures—a practical product for Florida homeowners seeking to enjoy outdoor living without exposure to the elements.
Though humble in size, the founders had a vision: to deliver quality, custom products backed by excellent service. That vision fueled steady growth in the 1980s as the company expanded into aluminum and vinyl-framed windows and doors, leading to a rebrand as PGT Industries in 1987.
Innovation Born from Adversity: Hurricane Andrew
The true turning point came in 1992, when Hurricane Andrew devastated South Florida and revealed dangerous flaws in traditional residential construction—particularly in windows and doors. The industry and regulators quickly realized that better protection was needed against extreme weather.
PGT responded to the challenge head-on. The company poured resources into R&D and, by 1996, introduced WinGuard®—a revolutionary line of impact-resistant windows and doors. These products, built with laminated glass and reinforced frames, were engineered to withstand high winds and flying debris without compromising the building envelope.
This innovation positioned PGT as a leader—not just in Florida, but across hurricane-prone markets nationwide.
Scaling Up: National Recognition and Market Expansion
In the early 2000s, PGT experienced rapid growth. The demand for hurricane-resistant building materials exploded as new codes were adopted across the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. PGT expanded its manufacturing operations, invested in automation, and grew its dealer network to reach new markets.
PGT went public in 2006 and later restructured as PGT Innovations in 2016, becoming the parent company for a growing portfolio of window and door brands, including:
-
CGI®
-
WinDoor®
-
Western Window Systems
-
Echo Windows
-
Anlin Windows & Doors
-
Martin Door
This strategic expansion helped PGT diversify beyond just hurricane markets and into luxury residential, energy efficiency, and custom architectural applications.
A Legacy of Innovation and Community
PGT’s commitment to innovation didn’t stop with product development. The company has invested heavily in its North Venice campus, which includes one of the largest and most advanced window and door manufacturing facilities in the U.S. They’ve also played a key role in shaping Florida’s building code, serving as thought leaders in resilient design and disaster preparedness.
Beyond the numbers, PGT has built a legacy of community involvement, job creation, and family values. With thousands of employees and a growing national footprint, they continue to stay true to their Florida roots and their mission to “protect what matters most.”
Looking Ahead
As climate change increases the frequency and intensity of severe weather, the demand for resilient building solutions continues to rise. PGT Innovations remains at the forefront—developing smarter, stronger, and more sustainable products to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
From a small Florida startup to a nationally recognized brand, PGT’s historic growth reflects not just business savvy, but a deep understanding of what homeowners need to feel safe, secure, and confident in their homes—no matter what’s outside.
